Native Landscaping

NorthPointe Terrace is sponsoring a free community talk on “The Beauty of Native Landscaping” on Saturday, April 14th at 1 p.m. Dr. John Larson, principal ecologist with Applied Ecological Services, will present information on the benefits and splendor of native landscaping and prairie restoration.

“NorthPointe Health and Wellness Campus will be a wonderful example of prairie restoration and native landscaping,” explains John Larson, PhD. “NorthPointe’s leadership envisions the 122-acre campus restored to a natural prairie, both for the aesthetics, as well as the ecological benefits. They are committed to a natural healing environment that includes a natural landscaping, as well.”

Why go native? There are numerous benefits to planting native plants. Homeowners and corporate land managers are realizing the benefits of using native plants that are adapted to our local soils and climates- less care, fewer problems, and lower costs, not to mention the beauty. In contrast, many non-native plants cannot support themselves without costly fertilizers, harsh chemicals, irrigation and constant care.

Applied Ecological Services, of Brodhead, Wisconsin, is nationally recognized for their expertise in this area. Dr. Larson has over 15 years of professional experience in ecological restoration and management planning and design. His work not only addresses the flood control of land management, but also water quality enhancement and groundwater recharge benefits.

“We believe that everyone can do their part to not only improve the environment in which they live, but provide for a ecological healthy landscape,” continues Dr. Larson. “While it will take a minimum of three years for the prairies to fully mature in NorthPointe’s native landscaping, the result will be a wide diversity of native plants. Some of these include blue stem grasses, Indian grasses, and a colorful display of wildflowers, including butterfly milkweed, false sunflower, bergamot, lupine and native asters that will bloom throughout the growing season.”

NorthPointe Terrace Assisted Living facility opened it’s doors in January, while the entire Health and Wellness Campus will start serving patients later this fall. For community members interested in attending this free presentation, please call Jessica at NorthPointe Terrace, 815-525-4805, for reservations. There is limited seating for this popular topic, and they would like to be able to accommodate everyone. NorthPointe Terrace is located at 5601 E.
